Input fields

FieldTypeMeaning
recipientsarrayWinning organisations, as name text or 12-character SAM UEI, e.g. ["palantir"], ["university of texas"] or ["FSY4LVSBGWB7"]. USAspending matches the text against recipient and parent company names and UEIs. Empty (default) = all recipients.
tickersarrayOnly awards whose recipient or its parent company matches these US-listed tickers (NYSE, Nasdaq, CBOE; exact cleaned SEC company name), e.g. ["PLTR"] or ["LMT", "BAH"]. Subsidiaries are found through their parent company. Empty (default) = no ticker filter; every row still gets a ticker when its name matches.
agenciesarrayAwarding agencies by abbreviation, name or toptier code, e.g. ["NASA"], ["Department of Energy"], ["097"] (DoD). A name that is not a top-tier agency is searched as a sub-agency, e.g. ["Defense Logistics Agency"]. Empty (default) = all federal agencies.
awardTypesarrayWhich awards: "contracts" (USAspending codes A-D: BPA calls, purchase orders, delivery orders, definitive contracts), "grants" (02-05: block, formula, project grants, cooperative agreements), "loans" (07, 08), "direct_payments" (06, 10), "other" (09, 11: insurance, other assistance). E.g. ["grants"]. Default ["contracts"].
keywordsarrayFull-text search over award descriptions and other text fields, e.g. ["artificial intelligence"] or ["cybersecurity"]. Several keywords = any of them. Empty (default) = no keyword filter.
naicsCodesarrayNAICS industry codes, 2 to 6 digits, e.g. ["541512"] (computer systems design) or ["3364"]. Contracts only. Empty (default) = all.
pscCodesarrayProduct and Service Codes, e.g. ["DA01"] (IT software development) or ["AR"] (space R&D). Contracts only. Empty (default) = all.
cfdaNumbersarrayAssistance listing (CFDA) numbers as NN.NNN, e.g. ["47.070"] (NSF computer and information science) or ["93.855"] (NIH allergy and infectious diseases). Financial assistance only. Empty (default) = all.
placeOfPerformanceStatesarrayTwo-letter US state or territory codes where the work is done, e.g. ["TX"] or ["VA", "MD", "DC"]. Empty (default) = anywhere, including abroad.
dateFromstringEarliest action date (signing date of the award or of a modification), YYYY-MM-DD, e.g. "2026-07-01". Searchable from 2007-10-01. Empty (default) = 30 days before dateTo. DoD contracts appear up to 90 days late.
dateTostringLatest action date, YYYY-MM-DD, e.g. "2026-09-30". Empty (default) = today.
minAmountintegerOnly awards whose total obligated amount (all actions since signing) is at least this many US dollars, e.g. 1000000. Empty or 0 (default) = no minimum.
sortBystring"amount" (default) = awards ordered by their largest action (obligation) in the date window, largest first; that action is the one shown. "date" = ordered by their latest action in the window, newest first. Loans-only searches rank by loan face value.
maxResultsintegerMaximum award rows, one per award, e.g. 20. Default 20, maximum 1000. Each row is one charged event.

Sources, licence and limits

One row per award or per transaction? Per award. An award (contract, grant, loan) gets many actions over its life: the base award and its modifications. A row shows the award's largest action in your window (action_amount_usd, action_date, modification_number) next to its lifetime totals. If award_date_signed is before your window, the row is a modification of an older award, not a new win.

How fresh is the data? Civilian agencies report within days. Department of Defense contract actions are published up to 90 days after signing (a DoD rule), so recent DoD windows are nearly empty; for same-evening DoD awards use our Pentagon / DoD Contract Awards Actor.

What does minAmount filter on? The award's total obligated amount, not the single action.

Why is an amount 0 or negative? Administrative modifications obligate $0, de-obligations are negative, and loan actions obligate $0 (the face value is in total_value_usd).

How does ticker matching work? The recipient name and its parent company (from the award record) are cleaned (lower case, no Inc/Corp/LLC/Holdings) and must exactly equal the cleaned name of a NYSE, Nasdaq or CBOE company in the SEC's ticker list. We would rather miss a match than give a wrong ticker: joint ventures, foreign parents, renamed subsidiaries and private companies stay null. It is not investment advice.

Are individuals included? No. USAspending redacts financial assistance to individuals ("REDACTED DUE TO PII") and groups small payments into county-level "MULTIPLE RECIPIENTS" records; we leave both out. Some contracts go to sole proprietors whose business name is a person's name; those are shown exactly as USAspending publishes them, with nothing added.

Why does a keyword match an award whose description lacks it? USAspending's keyword search covers more text fields than the description shown.

What is not included? Sub-awards, IDV vehicles themselves (their task orders are included), DUNS numbers, recipient street addresses and executive pay. Search history starts at 2007-10-01. A run scans at most 2,000 actions; narrow the filters for rare matches.

Legal basis? USAspending.gov data may be copied, redistributed and used commercially (see LEGAL.md in the source). Source: USAspending.gov, U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Company names and locations may include data supplied by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. (D&B); they are served per query, never as a bulk extract.
